Do Students Care about Fast Fashion?

Part of teaching students to think critically and to have real-world problem solving skills is helping them to see what kinds of social and economic problems exist and how they can be a part of the solution.  That’s not to say they all must become activists or humanitarians, but it is good to get them thinking about some of the “big issues”, take a look at how those are affecting us globally, and see what organizations exist to help reduce or solve these problems, and how students can be a part of the solution.

One of this “big issues” is the clothing industry.  Today it’s easy to find stores selling fast fashion–cheap, disposable clothing items that are easy to purchase, and easy to discard once they are no longer desirable.  However, this has some big consequences for our world, the environment, and the local and global economy.  The film The True Cost discusses many of these consequences, as well as taking a look at some individuals and organizations who are working to change this trend.

Here is a screening guide, with discussion questions starting on p. 5 that will help you start the conversation with your students.  For more information, you can find their website here and take a look at some solutions and action currently being taken.
