One great resource that any school has, is its own students. Using older students to mentor and help teach younger ones strengths both students in their understanding of key concepts. This article from Edutopia talks specifically about older students tutoring or mentoring the younger ones in the use of technology. But this practice is useful in any subject. In fact, I recently did some observations while visiting private Christian schools in Florida, one of which was actively using a program similar to the ‘tech buddies’ mentioned above. Except these older students tutored younger ones in key literacy skills. These older students were hand picked by teachers who saw in them the skills and patience to teach and mentor little ones, and these students felt honored to have been chosen and really enjoyed the time they spent helping others learn. In the end, everyone benefits.
